Play65 web site also runs different backgammon tournaments, using the elimination format. In the first round, players are paired at random. Then, each pair of players is played a match until the final 2 players remain, similiar to tournaments in the real world.
The advantage of joining tournaments is in the fact that players are paying a very low entry fee (some tournaments in Play65 are even free to enter) while winning amount can be more than 10 folds of the entry fee.
Note that some backgammon tournaments require a certain player score to join, which means that only players whos score is in the range allowed can join the tournament.
